Frequently asked questions
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, rhythmic technique designed to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses very light pressure and skin-stretching movements to support the body’s natural detoxification and healing processes.
Is MLD the same as massage therapy?
No. MLD is not traditional massage therapy.
While massage focuses on muscles and tension relief, Manual Lymphatic Drainage focuses on the lymphatic system and fluid movement. The pressure used during MLD is very light and gentle.
What conditions or concerns can MLD help with?
MLD may help support:
- Post-surgical swelling and recovery
- Inflammation and fluid retention
- Circulation and lymph flow
- Relaxation and nervous system regulation
- Feelings of heaviness or bloating
- General wellness and recovery
MLD is not a replacement for medical treatment.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Please:
- Drink plenty of water 24 hours before your session
- Avoid lotions and deodorants prior to treatment
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Eat a light meal beforehand if needed
- Avoid strenuous activity after your appointment
You will also be asked to complete an intake form before your first session.
What should I expect during treatment?
MLD is performed directly on the skin using slow, repetitive movements. Most sessions include abdominal work to activate deeper lymphatic pathways.
Clients are professionally draped throughout the session, similar to massage therapy.
Many clients describe the treatment as deeply relaxing and calming.
Will I feel sore after treatment?
Most clients feel relaxed, lighter, or less swollen after treatment. Occasionally, clients who are dehydrated or overly active after treatment may experience mild fatigue or flu-like symptoms.
Proper hydration before and after your session is very important. It is very important, and alcohol should be avoided after your session for 24 hours.
Who should NOT receive MLD treatment?
You should not receive treatment if you currently have:
- An active infection
- Fever
- A new Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- See contraindications list on intake form for more information
Certain medical conditions may require clearance from your healthcare provider prior to treatment.
